Intuit Product Design Internship

Operation Smoney and Share

DURATION: June 2021 - Sept 2021   /    ROLE: Product Design Intern   /    SCOPE: Product Design, Product Strategy, User Research

Overview

During Summer 2021, I joined Intuit as a product design intern. I was a part of the design team for the Mint app. Specifically, I worked on a social sharing feature that Mint wanted to release to allow our users to share their financial achievements. On top of this, I also proposed an additional project based around Mint community, a concept that allows users to view and interact with other Mint users.

Primary project –

Operation Smoney and Share

Problem

Mint users are sharing their financial progress, but we’re not making it easy for them.

How might we design an integrated social sharing feature that celebrates magical moments throughout the users financial journey and make them feel supported?

Solution

I designed a social sharing feature that allows users to share their financial goals, milestones, and achievements. I conducted research to understand the specific achievements that users are more interested in celebrating and sharing and also looked into HOW they want to celebrate.

Secondary project –

Mint Community

Problem

Minters don’t feel comfortable sharing their financial situation on social media but are willing to share with people who are in the same situation as they are

Ideal state of solution

In a perfect world: There is a community of Minters who are in the same financial situation as I am.
The biggest benefit to me is: I can see how others are doing financially
Which makes me feel: safe and inspired that we are all in this together

I led a 11-star experience brainstorm session (inspired by Airbnb) to think about what a Mint community capability would look like. The session generated some really good ideas that I was able to take to explore further later on.

What did I do

I'm unable to fully disclose everything that I worked on because of NDA, but here's a high level overview!

User Research

Being customer obsessed and conducted numerous research sessions to learn about user behaviors.

Product thinking

Working with PMs to think about how the capability lives within the app.

Designing the user flow

Designing the end-to-end user flow backing by research insights and business problems.

How the feature co-exists with other functionalities

Constantly thinking about how the feature could leverage other features within the app.

Rapid Prototyping

Creating prototypes quickly for concept experiements and usability testing.

Specs & Developers Handoff

Speccing my designs and collaborated with the dev team to ensure quality development.

Takeaways

1. Prototype Without Permission

This is the phrase that my design manager says often. This phrase really reminds me to just go ahead and make something when I think of it. It's always good to make prototypes of any ideas that I have so it helps me go as broad as possible with my ideas. If I'm always asking for permission before making things, given the nature of the slow process of corporations, I'll never get things done!

2. Be more confident in my design decisions

This is something that I am still working on and eager to develop as I gain more experiences. I'm still learning to ignore the Imposter Syndrome that I experience and be more confident in my reasoning and decisions. This will also help me to navigate through the unknown when no one has the answers to my questions.
